Types of cable joints

If one of the cables differ from the other, then you use a transition joint.

The preference for cold shrink systems is limited only to those areas where you cannot use the heat shrink system. Otherwise, the heat shrink system will give you perfect waterproof and stable joints with a superior mechanical strength. The use of a blow-torch to fuse the sleeve material to the joint makes the joint very secure.
In the cold shrink joints, the sleeve is slipped onto the joint after joining the bare wires. Then the sleeve tightens over the joint due to the preinstalled tension in the sleeve. This helps make the joint secure.
